Outcomes of community optometry-based glaucoma referral filtering services in England, 2021 to 2025

This study evaluates community optometry-led glaucoma referral filtering services delivered across England between 2021 and 2025, demonstrating how patients can be appropriately managed closer to home while reducing unnecessary hospital referrals. Across the two pathways analysed, 28,284 patients were seen through the Glaucoma Repeat Readings Service, with 69.5% discharged to routine care, while 25,101 patients patients entered the Glaucoma Enhanced Referral Service, with 49.3% discharged. Overall, the findings highlight the role of community-based services in safely improving access, optimising specialist capacity, and supporting more efficient NHS care.
