This evaluation explores the impact of community optometry-led cataract services across England, showing how integrated pathways can improve outcomes while reducing pressure on hospital services. Across over 8,000 referrals, the pathway achieved a high cataract conversion rate of 91.8%, demonstrating strong clinical decision-making. Patients were also supported closer to home, with more than 8,200 post-operative appointments delivered in primary care and over 10,000 hospital appointments saved. The findings highlight the role of community-based care in improving access, increasing efficiency and supporting a more sustainable NHS.
