From Hospital to Community: Service evaluation of multi-locality community optometry-based Post Vision Screening services for children in England

This multi-locality evaluation examines the delivery of Community Glaucoma Services across England, demonstrating how accredited community optometrists can safely monitor patients with low-risk glaucoma and related conditions outside of hospital settings. Across 2,600+ patients and 2,800+ appointments in 2025, most patients remained appropriately managed in community care, with only a small proportion requiring referral back to hospital. The service achieved high levels of patient satisfaction, with almost all patients recommending it, while also reducing travel burden and associated carbon emissions. Overall, the findings highlight the role of community optometry in improving access, enhancing patient experience, and supporting more sustainable, efficient glaucoma care pathways.
