This service offers accessible support to patients managing sight loss that is having an impact on their quality of life, optimising their remaining vision and helping them maintain independence.

Low Vision Service

The low vision service facilitates the provision of low vision equipment and advice, as well as serve as an accessible gateway to additional support services for patients, whether they are newly diagnosed or dealing with long term, progressive eye conditions.

The functional vision assessment part of this service includes but is not limited to:

  • Measurement of vision at various distances and at different levels of contrast
  • Measurement of refraction and corrective lenses
  • Colour Vision testing where appropriate
  • Assessment of glare function
  • Assessment of need for magnification

During an appointment a registered Optometrist or specialist Dispensing Optician will determine the amount of vison a patient has, find out the amount of vision a patient needs and prescribe the best magnification device(s) or other equipment that will allow a patient’s daily tasks to be carried out.

As part of this service where appropriate the patient will be referred or signposted to other beneficial support services.
