Children’s Post Vision Screening Service
This service provides an enhanced sight test following a failed vision screening within school at reception age. Any child that is identified as having vision below the expected standard is referred into the service for a full assessment.
The assessment includes, but is not limited to:
- Measurement of how well the child sees using a specific eye test chart for children
- Assessment of how the eye focuses
- Assessment on how the eyes work together
- Measurement of refraction and corrective lenses using eye drops
- Full examination of the eye using appropriate specialist equipment
- Follow up assessment after 6–8 weeks where required to ensure that any prescribed spectacles fit and are being worn correctly
- Further follow up after 18 weeks if required to re-assess vision
Integrated Children’s Service
This service allows collaboration between primary care in opticians (also known as optometrists) and hospital eye services to allow early intervention and management of poor vision for children.
The service provides an alternative service for children who are found to have poor vision and have been referred to hospital but are considered suitable for care in your local opticians.
