PES Enhanced Opera-Medisoft Functionality Benefits Patients and Practitioners

21 April 2023

PES have developed a system interface in order to enable the integration of our Opera digital platform with the Medisoft ‘community module’.

PES have through collaboration with Referral Management Services (RMS) and Medisoft developed a system interface in order to enable the integration of Primary Eyecare Services Opera digital platform with the Medisoft ‘community module’ – primarily removing the need for clinicians to complete data entry into the ‘community module’ as this is fed directly from Opera – thereby delivering improved benefits to both the patient and the healthcare setting.

This demonstrates significant progress, as the integration is a key enabler for true ‘integrated care’ initiatives – providing NHS trusts and optometry practices with the ability to manage a single patient across both settings, whilst ensuring and maintaining clinical safety and at the same time delivering significant costs savings – seamlessly providing patient care across different care settings.

The advantages provided by this integration benefit both the patient, and the hospital and optometry practice:

  • Reducing costs whilst improving the patient experience – patients no longer require an optometrist letter, and will be contacted directly by their chosen optometry practice;
  • Improved workflow – the direct data feed removes the requirement for additional data input;
  • Single system – the optometrist need only enter data into Opera, with the integration then feeding the data into the EMR, removing any double data entry;
  • Patient transparency – Opera displays a ‘queue’ of patients, providing the optometrist with improved data on patients and therefore better understanding of those who will be attending their setting;
  • Improved patient data – Opera allows results to be sent straight in to mediSIGHT, completing the patient pathway, and allowing the Optometrist to highlight any patient complications to the hospital;
  • Secure transmission of sensitive data – the use of ‘PINS’ ensures patient identifiable data is secure within the trusts network and is not shared beyond that network.

Medisoft:

“At a time when healthcare resources are becoming more constrained, and the NHS is increasingly relying on primary care community providers to take the pressure off secondary care services, it has never been more important for the NHS to work efficiently and effectively with their community optometrists – and the ability to share patient data is a major step forward in this regard.”

Dharmesh Patel, PES Chief Executive, said:

“Our recent work with RMS in adapting Medisoft’s functionality is bringing huge benefits for practitioners and surgical providers alike. Our primary care optometrists no longer have to re-enter the same data in order to be able to maintain a log patient details, treatments, observations and referrals into hospital records. Real time data can now be shared across systems.

Thanks to this enhanced interoperability, patients can be reassured that their test results, diagnoses and treatments remain as complete and as up to date as possible. This improves both the speed and quality of NHS care across all settings.”

The Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) was an early adopter of PES’s new integrated system and staff are already noticing many improvements and advantages as a result. The interface has also been implemented in East Cheshire NHS FT and with Spa Medica.

NOTE: This functionality is subject to the surgical provider having the necessary versions and permissions from Medisoft.
