National Eye Health Week was first launched in the UK in 2009. It is a UK-based annual public awareness campaign dedicated to promoting eye health and the importance of regular eye examinations.

A collaborative venture led by a group of leading eye health organisations, the 2023 campaign will explore a number of themes connected with maintaining good eye health. A different aspect of vision awareness will be covered each day:
Monday 18 September – NHS Eye Care and Support
Promoting the eligibility criteria for NHS sight tests and optical vouchers and the range of additional services provided by high street optometrists, including Community Urgent Eye Care Services (CUES) and Minor Eye Care Services (MECS).

Tuesday 19 September – Myopia and Me
Highlighting the increasing levels of myopia across all age ranges and why early diagnosis is so vital in the ongoing management and control of the condition.
Wednesday 20 September – Digital Eye Care
Spotlighting top tips to prevent screen fatigue whilst at work, rest and play.
Thursday 21 September – Eye on Mental Health
Exploring the links between eye health and mental well-being.
Friday 22 September – Live Well, See Well
A focus on how lifestyle factors can influence our eye health, as covered in more depth in the official NEHW 2023 lifestyle magazine, VISTA which is full of interviews, articles and hints and tips about all aspects of eye care.
Saturday 23 September – Vision Matters Photographic Competition and Exhibition
Research points to a growing base of evidence of the effectiveness of the arts in influencing health enhancing behaviours – here’s a chance for us all to interpret this link.
Sunday 24 September – Smoking and Sight Loss
Promoting the proven link between certain eye diseases and vision problems with smoking, including: age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, optic nerve damage and impaired night vision.
